The Power of Ignoring

For more than fifty years, the great Indian thinker and spiritual teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti has traveled the world, striving to convey his unspeakable message in words. In one of his speeches towards the end of his life, he surprised the audience with a question: “Do you want to know my secret?” Everyone was paying attention. There were many people in the crowd who had been listening to him for twenty to thirty years but had failed to capture the essence of his teachings. Finally, after all these years, the master would give them the key to understanding. “Here is my secret,” he said. “I don’t care what happens.”

He didn’t explain any further, and I think his audience was even more surprised than before. But the message that this simple statement conveyed was actually very powerful.

What’s the message of this when I don’t care what happens? It shows that I am in tune with what is happening internally. “What is” is actually what the situation is in the moment, but it means the content, the form in the moment. To be in tune with what is is to be in a state of inner nonresistance with what is. To not mentally define anything as good or bad is simply to leave it as it is. Does this mean you won’t do anything to make a difference in your life? No, quite the contrary. When the basis of your actions is in harmony with the present moment, your actions are empowered by Life’s own intelligence.
